#44 - Maine

Recently I persuaded Margie we could manage camping on the beach in Massachusetts with all four kids and Max still not even a year old.  A primary objective was to make the short (< 1 hour) drive from the campsite into Maine, the only remaining state east of the Mississippi I haven't visited yet, and #44 on my march toward visiting all 50.

So the past two nights, we stayed at Salisbury Beach State Reservation, a public campground near the Massachusetts border with New Hampshire.  We were just about the only tent campers in the RV area, surrounded by camping trailers and RVs of different specs and sizes from across the country.  Despite cold temperatures (low in the 40s the first night), typically gusty coastal winds, abundant cold-symptom sniffles, and the fact we didn't have the air mattress (my fault), we endured the first night and decided to tough it out and stay the second night (much to the disappointment of our neighbors, I'm sure).

With school in session, the beach was quite empty, and the temperature got into the 70s the second day, so we had a pleasant little beach visit before heading out on our drive to Maine.  Our primary destination was the Cape Neddick / Nubble Lighthouse in York, Maine.  Once in Maine, I became obsessed with trying a Lobster Roll and am happy to report my first one, from the restaurant just beside the Lighthouse, did not disappoint despite its $18 price point.  Delicious!

Other highlights of the trip included campfire breakfast-burrito perfection, warmer temperatures the second night (in the 50s), Rex losing his third tooth on the drive home, driving past the exit to Walden Pond and doing some research on Thoreau online, listening to the audiobook of Bunnicula and the Best of Talking Heads--part of Margie's effort to break us out of our Tom Petty rut.

The Dakotas (#45 and #46 on my list) are in sight, too, for 2013 with a creatively detoured drive from next month from Denver to my BYU roommate Rudy's wedding in Minneapolis.
