Big Sky Country (JFR 2009)

In an earlier post, you might recall that we suggested holding the next Johnson Family Reunion (JFR) at Glacier National Park (GNP). There wasn't much response to this suggestion, but we did a bit of research anyway, since group lodging quickly fills far in advance at Glacier. We researched doing a cabin like in Wyoming where we all can stay or doing separate hotel rooms, and the group cabin turned out to be the cheapest. Here is a link to the cabin we found:

It does require a 4 night minimum stay which, after the Montana 7% bed tax, would bring the lodging total to $147 per person for a four night stay. (Rates go up slightly after Feb. 1st, 2008). We thought it might be convienient to hold the reunion around the 4th of July and know that the cabin has no current bookings for the month of July, 2009.
We're also researching a Bed and Breakfast that we hope to have more info on after talking to someone there. Here's the link to it:

Let us know who's interested. We're definitely planning on going to Glacier that summer, and think it would be a great place to hold a JFR. There aren't many places that compare to the beauty of Glacier as seen above, so how can you resist? If we plan on it now, it gives everyone
1 1/2 years to save money and plan for transportation. The good news is that it's conceivably within driving distance for most everyone. See below:

Idaho Falls: 434 mi – about 6 hours 48 mins
Salt Lake City: 646 mi – about 9 hours 38 mins
Springville: 693 mi – about 10 hours 23 mins
Arvada: 1,018 mi – about 14 hours 36 mins
Las Vegas: 1,064 mi – about 15 hours 28 mins
Pittsburgh: 2,056 mi – about 1 day 8 hours

Share your thoughts! We're waiting...

Christmas in the 'Burgh

We had a Merry Christmas in Pittsburgh and have a few pictures to share. I never take as many as I intend to on Christmas Day, so some are from a day or 2 after the big celebration. We had a Christmas house guest who made his way into a couple of the shots. We are very ready for Otto's mommy and daddy to come pick him up this evening. We never thought we'd meet another soul more needy than our boys, but this Christmas we did.

Christmas In Idaho Falls - 2007

Here are some pictures of Christmas in Idaho Falls. As evidenced by the pictures, Riley and Macie made out like Queens. We are just waiting for the broken limbs to occur due to the rollerskates and trampoline.

KJ needs a new shoe...

I'm sure it is no secret to our family, my co-workers and now UTA commuters in SLC, that I LOVE my freaky shoes. So if anyone is wondering what to get me for Christmas, feel free to go onto Zappos.com, find the craziest size 13 you can find and order me only the left shoe. (There's got to be a market for single shoes out there with all the amputees hobbling around and tipping over out there. Maybe my million $ idea...ANYWAY)

The reason I need the new shoe is because I rammed my foot so far down my gullet with my last blog rant that I can't seem to retrieve my shoe. Everytime I burp it tastes like rubber. If only I had put that Heinze horseradish sauce on it. Next time.

This is the part where I apologize to Valerie for being a jackass (me being the jackass not her). Certainly she and Todd have a lot on their plate right now. I obviously wasn't taking anyone else's situation into account when I let me fingers do the walking and my brain do the napping. But coming from a dad of two girls, I can say with some authority on the subject, that T&V are great parents and have amazing kids. There is no debating that my fiesty little 4-yr-old niece is giving Todd premature gray hair. Good. He deserves it. :-) But don't be discouraged. Riles is, and always will be, a head-strong individual. Heaven knows there are a few of those types who have done the doggie paddle around the Johnson gene pool over the years. In the meantime, hang in there. If you need to send her to Uncle KJ's Boot Camp for Nieces and Midgets (the two markets were too small to stay afloat on their own) send her on a long-distance field trip. I don't have any magic tricks or wise advice to give when it comes to raising kids, but I can take her everywhere I go on the bus and train and keep her occupied during my adventures downtown. It helped Wendy and me with both Bubba and The Weasel.

In conclusion (finally) let it be known that I concur that there are more important things than a $15 gift at Christmas. Fortunately, in our family, there is no doubt in anyone's mind whether they are loved....no matter what (I can attest to this personally from many situations that have occured in my life. I've never felt any judgement or lack of support. Thanks) so in actuality, a small gift is just a simple token of a much larger, more important gift that could never be purchased, packaged or EVER returned.

If you need anything T&V, just say the word.

Let's hear it for ME!!

I just submitted the grades for my class, and I am happy to have it over with! Whew! Here's hoping that I don't find reasons to stress and second-guess...that became a hobby of mine this semester. It was a good experience, but I am GLAD it is over and look forward to having some free time on my hands! Free time...what's that??

On a completely unrelated note, here's a picture from my Disneyland adventure with Jamie. There are many more to share, but this will be a little teaser for you!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

We got our first good snow storm last week and here are some pictures of us having some fun. Notice in the last couple of pictures the boys are in melt-down mode and ready to go inside. I love how it takes 20 minutes to put all the winter gear on, and I'm lucky if I can get the boys to stay outside for 15 minutes! Although, Felix and I did spend almost an hour out one day while Rex was napping. So far there have been no black eye sledding incidences. We'll keep you posted.

Hurricane Rex

I noticed that I have a series of pictures of Rex singlehandedly destroying the house. (Felix does his fair share, too.) I feel like we live in a pig sty and here's why. Also is a picture of the little piggy's stitches.

I can take the blame

...I have to admit that I am the one at the Johnson household ruining Christmas. You can blame me. But I am too fat and too stressed to have any desire to gift exchange. All of a sudden my future life is becoming a reality. How will I control three kids when I can't seem to manage the one 4-year-old I have now? How will we afford to buy diapers for two kids? How will I ever lose the 40 pounds I have already gained? (Not to mention the twenty more that are bound to come over the next two months) It's a holiday downer, but I really have just been stressed out lately. It will just be one less thing I have to worry about. So Todd can make it seem like he is trying to do the Christlike thing and donate to the po0r, but he is just trying to make me look like less of a scrooge. Sorry. -Val

Where the Hell's the Christmas spirit, dammit!

I'm away from the family blog for a short time and everything falls apart. Let me get this straight. Our tradition of drawing names and giving a gift to one of our siblings has been traded in for putting our present money in fast offerings? I don't think the Church wants the joke book I got Todd in their fast offering envelope. Then again, I'm sure some hungry little Peruvian boy can read it in order to forget his hunger pains which will be swapped for a side ache from laughing so hard once he has the jokes translated into English. Come on Georgie, where's the brother I love who exchanged photo text messages with me at 4:00am on "Black Friday" while he waited in line at "Fast Offerings Are Us." Oh wait, that was TOYS R US! Just because I'm not a 4-year-old girl doesn't mean I wouldn't cry myself to sleep if a funny or cheesy or heart-felt gift from one of my siblings wasn't under my tree Christmas morning. Ok, I hate Christmas trees, but you get the point. This gift-giving tradition will live on in the Johnson family if I have to personally walk to your homes in order to hand deliver a gift to each and every one of you by Christmas. I'd drive, but I still have to wait until January.

On a similar tangent, it slightly freaks me out that my brother has made a schedule for gift exchange through 2012....barring any marital status changes. Amy, I'll race you to see who can foil Scott's list first! Nanny nanny ha ha. Actually, I think adding Bobby to the list is going to happen before I foil the list.

Here is a little story I thought I'd share with the fam following my trip to Portland last week. During a layover in Boise on the first leg of my flight from Portland to SLC, passengers arriving in Boise de-planed and a new crew of flight attendants boarded before other passengers in order to restock the peanuts (sorry Scott) and beverages. I went to the top of the ramp to find an outlet to charge my laptop before flying the rest of the way to SLC but they Southwest employee told me I wouldn't have enough time and asked me to get back on the plane. No problem. About 10 minutes later, two Boise cops came on the plane and told me to get off the plane and follow them. Needless to say, they weren't very subtle about their invitation. I follow them up the ramp and through the crowd of people waiting to board the plane, to an empty boarding area where they tell me to sit while one of them interrogates me while the other tries to look menacing--he wasn't very good at it. Apparently, one of the flight attendants had submitted a sworn statement that I had said I was "dismantling a bomb" on the plane. That's right, I'm such a threat to national security, that I am DISmantling a bomb on a plane in Boise. I still have NO IDEA what I could have been talking about that would sound like "dismantle a bomb" to someone within earshot. Anyway, they take all of my equipment off of the plane and search it. Of course, I had just shot a wedding in Portland so I was carrying A LOT of camera gear which looks even more suspicious when the authorities already think you're a terrorist. Next, the authorities empty the plane, bring on the bomb sniffing dogs who sniff the cabin of the plane and the luggage compartment. Meanwhile, the Bosie PD, Air Marshals and the TSA interrogate me about my life, criminal history, destination, personal hygiene, seminary attendance and for some reason they wanted to know how well I knew Todd. Curious. Finally, once it was deemed that I was not a terrorist and there was no bomb on the plane, they begin to board the plane, but some of the passengers won't get on the plane if I do because they feel unsafe (I get this a lot, but it usually has nothing to do with terror plots). Southwest decides that I can't fly their airline the rest of the way to SLC and they reimburse Andrea for the cost of the flight and send us to Delta. The Air Marshal let me know that it's a federal offense to make bomb threats on an airplane but they were going to give me a break. Nice of them. As an added bonus, coming back through security after buying a Delta ticket, I am flagged and searched HEAD to TOE. Frisked, swabbed, analyzed, probed, x-rayed...the works. I felt like I was on an alien mother-ship. I had to draw the line at the mention of a full cavity search. A guy has his dignity after all. So in the spirit of holiday giving, I need each of you to donate $100 to my therapy fund so that I can sort out this traumatic experience in the tropical location of my choice. Merry Christmas to me!

Hopefully everyone is doing well. Margie, I am going to FedEx the reunion CD to you tomorrow. I know, I know, you'll believe it when you see it. Hopefully it isn't too late. I've only been reminded 10-20 times. Dang secretary of mine is SO unorganized.

Just as a quick follow-up note to everyone, Margie and I have one suggestion for a possible group present to mom and dad if anyone is looking for ideas.

Also a couple points to note on the gift exchange list:
  1. Some of your are swapped with either your gift giver or your recipient from last year, but everyone is at least giving to someone different this year.

  2. Moreover, I have the entire rotation mapped out until Christmas 2012 as long as no one changes marital status before then. : )

  3. This rotation is designed so that by 2012, everyone will have had given a gift to everyone else on the list at least once.

  4. Because I excluded anyone from being assigned their own spouse, however, Todd, Valerie, Margie, and I practically have our own exchange within the exchange, although I did manage to arrange the list so that not even any of us ever have to give to the same person before at least three years have passed.
Let me know if any of you have any questions and let the gift giving begin!
